Chapter Fifteen

Paris

Maya

Paris is just as I left it. However, I’m returning a different woman. Adom and I did not wake up until the pilot made his announcement to prepare for landing. When we awoke, the air was clear between us. We didn’t just call a truce; we entered a relationship. Whether by design or accident, this is where we are. Whether I want to admit it or not, Adom is my man. I know he sees me as his woman. But tonight, I want a conversation about what all this actually means. I appreciate the protection, care, and great sex, but what I really need is love. Otherwise, I need a jet back to Atlanta.

Chief Asante’s townhome is in the fashionable Saint Germain-des-Pres in the 6th Arrondissement located on the River Seine. I always wanted a place this prestigious but was never able to get it. I once managed to secure a beautiful place in the 8th Arrondissement, but that was it. Staying in the beautiful 400-year-old home is like enjoying a fairy tale written just for me, and Adom is the author.

The home keeps its Old-World charm with cream and gold interiors while embracing the twenty-first century with updated kitchens, bathrooms, and textiles in the common areas. Once we unpack, Adom has the cook prepare lunch and champagne on the balcony for us. Once I step outside and see the spread of fruits, pastries, and open face croque-monsieurs, my stomach growls loudly. I realize I ate nothing on the plane…except Adom.

Adom arches his eyebrows at the noise my stomach makes. “Hungry?” He smirks.

I laugh as I grab a strawberry off the fruit platter and sit down. “Yes, because an awful man held me naked and captive on his private jet and did not even offer me a glass of water! But I did have cake!”

Adom guffaws. “Oh, find this man straight away and I will thrash him post haste. There will be wahala in Paris tonight!”

I laugh until I cry at Adom’s words and accent. “I love it when you mix Ghanaian pidgin with the king’s English. It makes me feel like I’m getting the real Adom Annan. The Adom most of the world never gets to see.”

He nods. “Well, seeing that my next vocation will likely be as the 15th chief of Tafo, I am sure more of the world will hear it. Losing my Ghanaian accent used to bother me when I was younger, but then I accepted the fact that my English accent comes honestly. I spent most of my formative years there with Kofi and Senya in school. If you notice, we all carry varying degrees of the English accent and sensibilities. We came of age in London. However, when we need to set matters straight…Hanh! We return to Twi straight away.”

I laugh and reach across the table to grab his hand. His cellphone buzzes, but he ignores it. When it buzzes again, he releases my hand and pulls the phone from his pocket. He immediately takes a look at the screen and remains expressionless.
